Assessing The Market Value Of Your EPL Football Team

With the English Premier League (EPL) 22/23 only a few days away, there’s no better time to prepare for the new season if you haven’t already done so And, if Premier League history has taught us anything, one way to get critical insight into the future is to study the past in-depth. So, before we get into the craze of predicting how the EPL table will look by the end of the coming season, let’s see what the 21/22 table teaches us.

Establishing a Trend Between Club Value And Final Position

One of the reasons that money seems to move left and right in the world of sports is that it’s often a key determinant for bringing talent into a club which, by extension, strongly influences the performance of that club, up to a point at least. So, let’s start with the high-stake rollers in the EPL and see how the club value reflected where each team ended up.

At The Top Of The Table

The table below is the final top six (6) of the 21/22 EPL.

S/N

Club Name

Overall Club Value

Final League Position

1.

Manchester City

£ 863, 370, 000

1

2.

Liverpool

£ 834, 750, 000

2

3.

Chelsea

£ 782, 460, 000

3

4.

Manchester United

£ 696, 830, 000

6

5.

Tottenham

£ 533, 030, 000

4

6.

Arsenal

£ 468, 900, 000

5

The top 6 of the EPL are the teams with the highest overall market values from this table what’s more, except for Manchester United, which (somewhat unexpectedly) finished sixth, the lineup of the best finishers in the league correlated perfectly to their market values as well. It translates for Tottenham and Arsenal that they profited in even more ways than they likely anticipated at the start of the league. Now, this occurrence poses an interesting question; if the top six finishers of the EPL race were the most expensive clubs, what about the last three who ended up relegated to the EFL championship? Let’s find out!

At The Bottom Of The Table

The last three finishers here were;

S/N

Club Name

Overall Market Value

Final League Position

18.

Norwich

£ 138, 150, 000

20

19.

Watford

£ 133, 880, 000

19

20.

Burnley

£ 128, 720, 000

18

While the pattern doesn’t hold as finely as it did with the top finishers, it remains clear that the bottom finishers were also the clubs with the lowest overall market values. Now, what can we establish from this simple yet persistent trend?

The Takeaway

While it isn’t everything, it’s abundantly clear that money plays a pivotal role in clubs’ success in the EPL. In retrospect, this is only from clubs with more financial resources as they usually find it easier to lure higher-quality players to their side.
