Essential Tips For In-Play Asian Handicap Betting

This post takes an in-depth look at Asian handicaps and explores ways of using handicaps in live betting.

Asian Handicaps Better Strategy Than European

Handicaps are a way for punters to increase the value of their predictions and bag more profit. Let’s consider Asian handicaps, a unique, new handicap and betting market. A few years back, when Asian handicaps had not come into play, bookmakers only offered regular handicaps. Also known as European handicaps, these handicaps were made using whole numbers. Using soccer as an example, you could only handicap a team by something like +1 goal, +2, +3, or -1 goal, -2, -3, etc. This created one significant limitation - even with handicaps, the punter still had to contend with three outcomes when making a moneyline prediction: Home win, Away win, and Draw.

No Draws In Asian Handicaps

Picture a scenario where one backs Man United to beat Aston Villa by a margin (handicap) of -2. If Man United were to win the game 2-0, the punter would still lose their bet since the net result would be 0-0, which would be a hypothetical draw. This would not be an issue with Asian handicaps since they use decimal goals or points, like +0.5, +1.5, +2.5, -0.5, -1.5, etc. Therefore, if the above game ended Man United 2-0 Aston Villa, a bet of Man United to win by a margin of -1.5 goals would still win because the final, hypothetical scoreline would be Man United 0.5-0 Aston Villa. With Asian handicaps, it’s impossible to have a draw in soccer and other such games, which quickly eliminates a nuisance that many punters had grown weary of dealing with.

Asian Handicaps In Live Betting

Live betting, also known as in-play betting, is a modern sports gambling feature that allows punters to place bets in play or while a match or contest is ongoing. This is as opposed to pre-match betting, where one only gets the chance to make predictions before the starting time of the contest. As we’ve covered in several other posts here on WeWin, betting in-play has many advantages over pre-match betting. An in-play punter has much more information available than any pre-match punter. By analyzing the flow of a live game, a punter can get more concrete ideas about certain outcomes and has a chance to place profitable live bets that have a much higher success potential than pre-match bets.

Asian Handicap Live Betting Tips

Many punters might not know that it’s possible to use Asian handicaps in live betting! And not only is it possible, but also it’s highly advantageous and potentially very profitable. Here are a few ways to make Asian handicaps work for you:

  • Watch the game live. If possible, don’t focus too much on the popcorn - take an interest in the game! That way, the punter can collect as much useful info as possible for making handicap bets.

  • Go easy on the handicaps. By watching the game keenly, a punter should be able to gauge how likely a team or athlete is to win and by what margins. Let what you see on the field of play or court inform what handicaps you can confidently choose. If it seems likely that the favorite will score many more goals or points, then a punter may try a bigger handicap. Otherwise, in a game where the underdogs seem to be holding their own very well, a small handicap would be more prudent.

  • Be a sharp live punter. Remember, the bookmakers are also observing matters on the pitch to see how best to adjust their betting lines and conserve their profit. Good Asian handicap betting, when done live, requires the punter to know how to quickly seize opportunities at the earliest moment when they seem likely. For example, if a team has positive play for a sustained period, such a team might win by a big margin. In that scenario, it’s up to the punter to quickly place their Asian handicap bets before the bookie realizes the same thing and lowers the betting prices for the handicap.
